Saturday arrived. So did the laundry, the dishes, the shopping list, and a vague feeling that you should be making the most of your free time.
By Friday evening, Dull Hog has one plan: sit down.
By Saturday morning, the house has submitted seventeen counterproposals. The laundry basket is full. The kitchen has developed a plate collection. Someone suggests using the weekend to “get ahead.”
Ahead of what? Monday is coming either way.
The productivity trap has excellent weekend hours
A day off can start to look like an unpaid shift. Finish the chores. See your friends. Exercise. Cook something impressive. Finally deal with the cupboard that makes a noise when you open it.
Then, if there’s time, relax efficiently.
There are things that genuinely need doing. Dull Hog is not proposing that everyone live under a mountain of socks. He is questioning why a Saturday with clean clothes, a decent meal, and an hour on the couch can still feel like it didn’t count.
Perhaps the weekend does not need a performance review.
A smaller list leaves room for a life
These are Dull Hog’s own observations, not professional advice. One approach is to choose what matters today and let the rest be ordinary:
- Do the task that would make next week noticeably easier.
- Pick one thing you actually want to do.
- Leave some space that has no assigned purpose.
That last item is difficult to put on a checklist. The moment you label it “mandatory restorative leisure,” it begins to sound like a meeting Brenda would organize.
A slow coffee counts. Sitting outside counts. Doing absolutely nothing memorable counts, even if you have no photos to prove it happened.
Saturday mode does not require a perfect Saturday
Dull Hog eventually moves the laundry into the machine. The dishes get done later. The cupboard remains noisy and will probably outlive us all.
He sits down again.
His SATURDAY MODE T-shirt does not promise a life free of chores. It simply reflects the part of the weekend that belongs to him, even when the laundry basket disagrees.
